What We Turned in 2008

Last year [JEEBUS, TIME! STOP MOVING SO FAST!], more than most years I can think of, I was that "OMG, I HEARD THIS SONG 18,392 MONTHS AGO. AND SO I'M THAT MUCH BETTER THAN YOU" girl. (What can I say. I'm a pretentious cunt.) Anyway, here's our list of what we turned in '08.

10. The Kills - Hook and Line

To be honest, I sort of forgot about The Kills for a while between records, but then they came back with this record and this song that reminded me of every reason why I loved the Kills. It's raw, dirty, and apparently perfect for tv show soundtracks.

09. Beyonce - Radio

Sasha Fierce made me want to listen to the radio again. So I did. Then I immediately turned it back off. Irregardless. Song made me dance.

08. Sam Sparro - Black & Gold

Appropriate for either the dance floor or doing your homework, this song has a sick electro-inspired beat with just a hint of soul. I dare you to listen and not get hooked.

07. Gym Class Heroes feat. The-Dream - Cookie Jar

I've been having a secret love affair with The-Dream since I Luv Your Girl ("secret" because homeboy is ugly as shit) but only after annoying T over the phone by playing this song on repeat did we really come out as a couple.

06. N*E*R*D feat. CRS and Pusha T - Everyone Nose (Remix)

Song has everything we could want in a song: a Britney refernce, a Laloo reference, a MK reference, and Kanye rapping. What more could you want? Plus, I'm a firm believer that Lupe's verse is talks to me.

05. Young Jeezy feat. NaS - My President

This song made me cry on the day of the election. In the morning before the results, after the results came in, and the next day. This plus the SNL Weekend Update Song about the voting machine problems, only made my election day fever rise.

04. Mariah Carey feat. Young Jeezy - Side Effects

It's a damn shame that Mariah's label decided to put this on the backburner and not release it as an official single. Not only is the song fucking epic, it's dope as fuck and she performed it live effortlessly (as evidenced above). And Jeezy on the record doesn't hurt it much either.

03. Lil Wayne feat. Kanye West - Lollipop (Remix)

I've had "YOU'RE NOW FUCKING WITH THE BEST IN THE WORLD" as a ringtone for over 7 months now. I first heard this shit on a video on Kanye's blog --he was playing it as he played Connect 4 with Jonah Hill. I spun this shit a million times before we went to see Samantha Ronson, so by the time she put this shit on, I was screaming the lyrics at the top of my lungs --much to the chagrin of the older, more G', clubgoers on stage who had the "How the fuck does this little asian girl and this weird mexican girl with curly hair know all the words to this song that we haven't even fucking heard!?" face on the entire damn time.

02. Lindsay Lohan - Bossy

While we're majorly dissapointed that Spirit In The Dark didn't come out this year, we're glad that we at least got this. It made for some fucking epic times when Samantha Ronson played it, and we were the only ones who knew it. We are all "OMG OMG OMG CALM DOWN CALM DOWN CALM DOWN LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL JUST A LITTLE BOSSY OMG OMG OMG OMG LLOLOLOLOL" X 1890489128410924182409 the entire fucking time..

01. T.I. - Whatever You Like

Of course he's fucking number one. Couldn't leave my husband off this fucking list. While we both thoroughlt enjoyed all of Paper Trail, Whatever You Like seemed to be the most played for both of us this year, with T playing it 109 times and me playing it a recorded 425 (that doesn't include the number of times I watched the video, or listened to it in the car with my family).

2008. (We're both too tired to be clever.)

This list is a random assortment of stuff that happened to us, and happened to some of our favourite celebrities (because let's face it, our lives aren't really that interesting).

01. Met Samantha Fucking Ronson

Life changing moment. She played Kristine's fucking song. [EDIT: THE MUSIC HAD STOPPED, AND SHE SAID "WAIT, I NEED TO PLAY ONE MORE SONG" LEANED OVER HER COMPUTER AND POINTED AT ME AND SAID "THIS ONE'S FOR YOU" AND I DIED] Epic is not a strong enough word. Video of said moment here:

02. T.I. Got out of jail. Remained sexy while doing so.

03. We went home

Yeah, we're not really from there, but New York felt more like home than this stupid city ever has. And yeah, that is one of us sleeping under a map. And no, I'm not going to explain how that happened.

04. Twilight

Where can we even begin with Twilight? I can't even count the lulz that this book and movie brought. It also introduced the world to the wonders of RPattz and KStew so we can't exactly say we're complaining.

05. Move Back and Calm Down

06. Hit a Paparazzi

In case you haven't noticed, yeah, we kind of like Lindsay Lohan. I can't seem to find any good of video of this incident, but it gave us the photo for our header and that's good enough.

07. Cannes

This was sort of the definitive moment for one of our favourite celebrity couples of the year. Thanks to these photos, a thousand "I hug my best friend all the time and we're not lesbians" conversations happened, and many, many lolz were had.

08. Got a pair of Supras

This may not sound like a big moment, but we had to run all the fuck over New York to find a pair in the right size. It also kickstarted a serious and expensive obsession.

09. The Rachel Zoe Project airs. It's bananas amazing. We die.

10. Mary Kate wears a hat that makes her look like she's from a Shakespearean tale

11. Sarah Palin puts Alaska on the failboat. Meanwhile, Tina Fey becomes like, really famous.

12. Colin Powell, Oprah, and Jesse Jackson make Kristine and Tahnee cry. A lot. For real. Like buckets. For days.

13. Mariah Carey is epic. Gets fed by french woman. Marries Nick Cannon (not so epic).

14.Radar posts questions from Scientology. Scares Kristine. Gives Tahnee Tom and Katie nightmares.

15. Jennifer Lopez had babies. Remained frighteningly before doing so.

For the record, neither is Tahnee.

16. Kristine and Tahnee discover the lohan kareoke video.

17. Beyonce stays Beyonce. Remains epic while doing so.

18. The Dark Knight comes out. Confuses the hell out of Kristine.

19. T.I. makes Whatever You Like. Dedicates it to Kristine (in her mind).

[EDIT] NOT IN MY MIND. ITS WAS REALLY DEDICATED TO ME, AND IT WAS ABOUT ME.

20. Lauren Conrad figures out she's a lesbian. Oh wait, that's next year.

What We're Turning #9

We haven't abandoned this blog (yet), it's just that the end of the semester tends to ruin a person's life and that makes blogging a little difficult. I don't know if my being in that broken state of mind has anything to do with this week's pick, but this record is just the kind of thing I need right now. I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I can't turn this shit off. It's actually a really solid pop album, and "When I Grow Up" isn't exactly indicative of its quality. So, if you want to party, or just dance around your room like a fool, get this record. For real.

808s & Heartbreak

I promised I'd reserve judgement on this record until I actually heard all the songs, and not that I have, I'm gonna let it rip.

I'll be upfront. I don't like this shit. Well, that's a lie. I like two and a half songs (those being Heartless, Robocop and half of Paranoid, but even with those my main complaint holds true). I'm still hoping that maybe after 20 more listens I'll change my mind on this one an d love it, but I really don't think that's going to happen.

No matter how great Kanye West thinks he is, he's just not a good singer. That's my number one problem with this record. He's no Boby Dylan either, so I'm not just going to let that slide. Especially when he's throwing his voice up at the forefront of these tracks, counting on that for the hook rather than some decent lyrics (see: Amazing). I mean, have you seen him try to sing this stuff live? Ouch. Some of these songs even start out pretty good, then the chorus hits and it just all falls apart. I really believe that if anyone else had made this record, people would not be all over it. It sounds like he layed down some demo vocals and just left them, thinking they were good enough.

I've seen quite a few people saying that all the hate on this record is coming from people who were expecting a rap record and don't like that he's taken a new direction. I want to make it clear that's not where I'm coming from. I like it when artists try something new. Some of my favourite records are the ones where people took a chance and reinvented themselves. I get it. Artists have to evolve. I'm not asking Kanye to make The College Dropout pt. 4. That would be boring. I'd even say that some of what he's doing on this record isn't that different from the direction you could feel him going in with Graduation and the stuff he was doing on the Glow in the Dark Tour. But here's the thing: just because he's trying something different doesn't mean it's good.

I've also been getting the vibe from some comments I've read around the internet that some people feel like because this record is "emotionally honest," it's not okay to criticize it. It's true that sometimes Kanye does get a little real on this record. At least he tries, but this record just feels like such a vanity project. If it helps him work his issues out, makes him feel better, then good for him. I just feel like his ego gets in the way of getting emotion across on this record. It's pretty hard to separate art from artist when it comes to Kanye.

To wrap this mess up, I'll at least give Kanye some credit and saw at least most of the beats are pretty sick. He's still a solid producers. Just work on the singing. Please.

What We're Turning #8

Kanye West - Amazing (feat. Young Jeezy)

Probably the only other song (aside from Heartless and RoboCop) off of Kanye's new one, that I am currently turning. Mostly because Jeezy rips it.

What We're Turning #7 (!!!)

Young Jeezy feat. Nas - My President is Black

After skipping school to watch the events unfold, followed by an hour and a half of balling my eyes out, I have no words for what is truly an historic moment. And I'm not even American.

Thank you, America. Tonight, you inspired the world.

Guess this is what he meant, when he said that he had a dream."
